If you've been using your Silhouette machine for a while, chances are you started with the Silhouette AutoBlade that came with your machine...and never knew anything different. But... the truth is, outside of user error (I said that too), the Autoblade is the #1 cause of bad cuts, no cuts, and frustration.
The Silhouette AutoBlade was designed with convenience in mind. The automatic adjustment feature means you don't have to manually set the blade depth. That sounds great in theory.
The problem is there are several pitfalls in the workflow of sending a design to cut that can cause the auto blade to fail and ruin a project. And you're probably not even aware it's happening.
The way the autoblade works is the recommended blade depth in the software is set based on the material type you select. When you click "Send", before cutting, the autoblade moves over a small channel where it taps.
With every tap, the blade depth is supposed to change. However if the blade:
- is not set in the carriage correctly
- if there's debris in the tapping channel
- if there's junk under the autoblade cap
- if the cap has a hairline crack
...the blade depth can't and won't tap fully and therefore the blade depth won't adjust correctly.
The autoblade then goes to cut, but it's set on the wrong blade setting for the material so the cut is...well a mess.
I've seen enough frustrated users to know - it's not worth troubleshooting, buying a new autoblade, or wasting more material. Instead it's time to move on from the Silhouette Autoblade and switch to a manual blade!
