Easiest Way to Open and Use Silhouette Files NOT Stored in Silhouette Library

With all the recent changes to the Silhouette Cloud storage limits, I'm getting a lot of questions about how to use Silhouette files once you've moved them out of Silhouette Studio.

It's actually very easy. In this tutorial, I'll show you exactly how to access and use your Silhouette files when they're stored somewhere else on your computer or on an external drive.

Why Store Files Outside the Library?

I've been preaching for a long time, that in order to protect your design files you should be storing them outside of Silhouette Studio.

The library is convenient..until it's not. It has proven to unstable, inconsistent at syncing, and there are times, like now, when Silhouette decides they're going to mass delete cloud storage and user-created files along with it.

Once you go through the process of exporting your Silhouette files onto your hard drive..then what?

Open Files Directly in Silhouette Studio

The easiest way to use files stored outside the library is to open them directly into the software in a design area. To do this just launch Silhouette Studio and go to the Design area. Then click the File menu at the top and "Merge."

Navigate to the location on your computer where you've stored your Silhouette files. This could be on a thumbdrive, your desktop, downloads or documents.

If you have them on an external cloud like Google Drive or Dropbox, you'll want to download them from there onto your computer first.

Select the file you want to open and click "Open." Silhouette Studio will load the file into your Design area just like it would if you opened it from the library.

This method works for any Silhouette Studio file format including .studio3, .jpeg and .png. as well as other compatible formats like SVG files (if you have Designer Edition or higher).
