How to Turn an Image into a Pattern in Silhouette Studio (The Easy Way)

You can turn images into a pattern with just a few clicks in Silhouette Studio.

The Advanced Replicate tool makes turning any image including a logo into a repeating pattern super fast and easy.  Keep reading to learn how!

Open Silhouette Studio and from the right sidebar open the Replicate tool.

Click the second tab to open the Advanced Replicate panel.

Import your image by going to File > Merge and navigating to the file. I'm using a team logo to make some custom team gear.

If the image is different layers, group it all together before you start turning it into a pattern.

Depending what you're going to do with the pattern you may want to scale it up or down. I'm going to eventually print my custom pattern on acrylic and use to make printed vinyl or sublimation wraps so I want the image to be pretty small.

To scale, select the image and pull one of the corners in or out.

Move the image into the top left corner of Silhouette Studio and keep it selected.

On the Advanced Replicate panel select how many copies of the image you want. Since I'm going to print an 8.5" wide sheet, I want about 23 copies.

But I also want each copy alternate right side up and upside down. To do this, adjust the rotation degree to 180 degree (or whatever amount of "spin" you want).

Click Replicate and the first row will be created.

To create a staggered pattern in Silhouette Studio, select the second copy in the first row and paste directly below. I like to place it directly below the "blank" space in the row above.

With that copy selected click "Replicate" again to create a second row.

Now that you have two rows you can group them together then copy and paste them all the way down the page or use the replicate down option although I find this sometimes results in odd placement with too much space between rows.

At this point you can either print directly from Silhouette Studio or you can export your file. If you have Silhouette Studio Business Edition you can export as a PNG with a transparent background which is what I recommend.

Go to File > Save As > Save to Hard Drive > PNG.

Now I can use to print onto Hard Surface paper and then apply to clear acrylic to make custom acrylic sheets and then laser cut keychains, earrings, and ornaments for the team.
