Design Trick! Using Glass Can Wraps as Patterns for Printing

If you want to get more out of the designs you own - use them in other ways! Glass can wraps become printed patterns or vertical sign designs are perfect for a sleeve or pant leg.

Here's my secret for turning glass can wraps into digital patterns I can print!

Of course the can wrap template can be used for sublimation, uv printing, or print and cut in any design software, including Silhouette Studio (you'll find a video on making custom patterns in Silhouette Studio below), but today I'm using the seamless digital pattern to create custom pattern acrylic to make laser cut earrings with the help of my White Toner transfer printer.

I'm working in iColor ProRip Essentials but, as mentioned, the design process is basically two simple steps no matter what software you use to turn glass can wraps into seamless digital patterns: scale and replicate.

Start by downloading your pattern to your computer. Unzip and open the folder to find the digital pattern file.

Open the pattern in your design software.

It's likely sized for a glass can..but we're not going to use it that way.

For my clear acrylic earrings I need the printed pattern on my acrylic to be really small so the pattern shows up well on the small earrings.

Select the glass can wrap and scale it down by selecting the pattern and pulling in one corner to size it. I scaled down to about 25%.

Then I made 3 copies across by cloning the original and placing them directly next to each other. In iColor ProRip Essentials > Right Click > Clone Graphic.

For the second row, I copied and pasted the first row, but slightly offset it so the pattern would still appear scattered and seamless.

I did this with a few of the different patterns in the Halloween glass can set!

Literally that's it..now just print!

These came out SO cute and the pattern size was perfect for the clear acrylic earrings or small keychains!

Check out this video on how to print patterned clear acrylic at home. I used my iColor 560 White Toner printer with hard surface paper and my xTool P2 laser cutter and engraver.

If you're using a different software and you're more comfortable in Silhouette Studio, you could do it all in there and then export as a PNG or SVG. I have a video you can watch here on creating seamless patterns in Silhouette Studio for this same use!
