How to Add Weeding Lines in Silhouette Studio: The Why Didn't I Think of That Method

Weeding lines in Silhouette Studio help to break up the negative space around a design to make weeding the vinyl or HTV easier.

Manually adding weeding lines can be time consuming and the Silhouette Studio automatic weeding lines in Business Edition can be too restrictive - but this "why didn't I think of that" method is super fast and easy!

Start in Silhouette Studio by opening your design or creating a design or text.

I'm using this design from So Fontsy's Christmas in July Bundle

Silhouette SVG, Cricut SVG, Silhouette fonts, Commercial use SVG, Silhouette cut files

If your design will need to be cut on more than one color material, separate the colors.

Now select everything in the work area to be cut, and open the Offset panel. Click Offset and increase the distance.

The offset distance is going to be dependent on your design, but you want to look for a distance where the offset auto-welds together as much as possible and avoids creating excessive areas to weed like those that I have highlighted in blue.

In this example I increased the offset distance to 0.4 and you can see that I ended up with two large offsets around each design. This really helps to break up the negative space and make weeding this design very easy.

After the design is cut you can quickly weed away the offset area to avoid fighting with the larger piece of vinyl around your design reducing the risk of the vinyl sticking to itself as you weed and your actual design being pulled off the backing as you weed.

Once the design is free you can easily and quickly remove the other excess vinyl without fear it will pull up your design off the carrier sheet or backing.
