Silhouette Studio Offset Tool: Why Are Pointed Corners Square?

If you're using the offset tool and wondering why sometimes the offset isn't giving you pointed corners on shapes like stars or hearts, it's not just you.

For some reason the offset squares off pointed corners instead of making an accurate offset- but there is an easy workaround.

Open your design in Silhouette Studio.

Now let's say you want to put an offset around a star. If you open the Offset panel > select your design > and click offset this is what you get.

You could go around to each of the bursts and manually modify the edit points. Doing that you risk the offset not being even ... and spending a bunch of time.

Instead, I would recommend you actually use an internal offset.  Take that same star, select it, and from the Offset panel click "Internal Offset."

You have two perfect stars with pointed edges.

The heart now has a problem at the top, but at least that's just one edit point to fix and not every corner.

You can double click the offset line to get the edit points and then slightly move and modify them to get the point.

  1. But then you're swapping the outward points being pointed for the inward points being rounded.. you still have to manually adjust something. I would think you're better off making a copy and resizing it?

    1. At that point it really just depends on the shape and which is less work.
