Apple has just rolled out the MAC OS Catalina update - the newest version of the MAC operating system - and it's significant for Silhouette Studio users.
One of the biggest changes with Catalina is it will ONLY support 64-bit software - including (but certainly not limited to) Silhouette Studio. This means if you are on the Catalina operating system on your MAC, you MUST update to Silhouette Studio V4.3 which is 64-bit as all previous versions of Silhouette Studio are 32-bit.
Before you go any further please read this entire post
How to Check Which MAC Operating System You Are Running
Click the Apple in the top left corner of your MAC computer.Click About this Mac. This will open a pop up displaying the current version of the MAC OS you are running.
If you are...Still on MacOS Mojave
If you are NOT yet on MacOS Catalina and instead are still running MacOS Mojave, the previous Mac operating system, you have two options:
Option 1: Avoid the OS Catalina Update...For Now
You can turn off automatic updates for now to stay on MacOS Mojave and therefore continue using your current version of Silhouette Studio as well. To turn off automatic OS updates, click the Apple icon in the top left corner of your computer > System Preferences > Uncheck "Automatically Keep My Mac Up to Date" > Click Turn Off Automatic Updates -OR- Do Not Update My Computer Tonight (to delay the update).
Option 2: Proactively Update Silhouette Studio in Preparation for MacOS Catalina
The alternative option is to proactively update to a 64-bit version of Silhouette Studio NOW before your computer automatically updates to Catalina (or you manually push the update).
By updating to Silhouette Studio V4.3 - the only version of the software available in 64-bit currently - you should have no interruption in the use of the Silhouette Studio software as your software will already be compatible with Catalina prior to updating the operating system.
CAMEO 4 Users:
If you have a Silhouette CAMEO 4 and you have already been using it
with Silhouette Studio, you would have needed to download V4.3 to run it
already, so your Silhouette software will already be compatible
whether you are using OS Mojave still or the new Catalina operating
system. You should not need to take any additional steps.
If you are...on MacOS Catalina
If your MAC computer has already updated to the Catalina OS, you will need to update your Silhouette Studio software to a 64-bit version, immediately, to continue to run it on your MAC. This is regardless of which Silhouette machine you are using.Go to the SilhouetteAmerica.com/software page and download a 64-bit version of the software. As of this writing, I would suggest V4.3.273 (yes, it's currently the beta version, but it's more stable than 263).
Once you download Silhouette Studio on your computer you will need to install it in the Applications folder. However, MacOS Catalina has changed the installation process slightly for ALL software programs.
2. A window will pop up where you need to drag the Silhouette Studio symbol to the Applications folder
3. Once this has happened, you will need to go into the applications folder and double click the Silhouette Studio software in an attempt to launch it.
You will get an error. ** Silhouette America is currently working rapidly to sidestep this error and steps 4-7
4. Right Click and select "Open"
5. If you get some kind of malicious/suspicious software pop up warning click "Open"
6. Another box will pop up asking for your system password. Click "Ok". This is your computer password, NOT your Silhouette America account or cloud password
7. After this initial password entry, on future launches of the software you will be able to double click the software to open it

ReplyDeleteAny idea how to fix the library error? Mine auto updated and I got it to work but when I try to sync my library nothing happens (just keep getting the gray circle saying it’s still “syncing”)
ReplyDeleteSame and when it tries to open now it tells me I can't log in as USER not found... I'm quite frustrated
DeleteTHANK YOU! I was getting nowhere and couldn't access any version of Silhouette Studio on Catalina. Your post walked me through the update perfectly
ReplyDeleteI will note that I had to right-click on the Silhouette Studio icon in my dock (rather than in the Finder window) to be able to get a new error box that included an "Open" option.
DeleteThank you for your tip, Rachel. I was stumped and you helped me get through it.

ReplyDeleteThank you! i had the hardest time updating then after hours and a phone call to Apple was so scared when my SIL wouldn’t open it. Very detailed and appreciated instructions. I had 2 other versions on my computer so I’m guessing I can’t open those anymore?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the help!
ReplyDeleteThis worked great but now when I try to look at my library it says to log in.. I do... and it says user not found... Program seems to work, I just can't get anywhere else.
ReplyDeleteI can log into the SIL site and see my key and that I have one download left for my designer edition.. in my account, but the actual program keeps saying USER NOT FOUND during library log in.. :( I had over 1700 designs in there!!!

ReplyDeleteI have updated my software and everything on my mat is still pixelated and not smooth. It will cut smooth but doesn't look smooth. Also all my type whether I do it myself or any type on the screen of the software (including the labels of all tools etc ) are all blurry. It is not a nice sharp display like it was on my old mac.
ReplyDeleteGo to the gear on the bottom right, click display and raise the anti aliasing. This should help.
DeleteHi, I've installed Mac OS Monterey and Silhouette doesn't open. Is it the same problem ? Do I have to wait for a new version of Silhouette or is there any other solution ?
ReplyDeleteThe silhouette studio I've downloaded is the latest version 4.5.152 and it doesn't open, it says left unexpectedly.
Best regards
