Which side of the mug does the vinyl decal go on?
The answer is - it depends on who you are making the mug for.
The general rule is the coffee mug decal (you can find the Don't Be a Little Prick design here) should be facing outward while the person is holding the mug in their dominate hand. Not only doe this allow the logo to be seen by others while you're drinking out of the mug, but it places the vinyl decal on the opposite side of where you'll be placing your mouth.
In other words, when applying the decal place the mug on the table in front of you with the handle on the right. The side facing you is where you'd want to put the decal for a left-handed person.
If the person is right handed, you'd want to put the vinyl decal on the side of the mug that would be facing outward while they're holding the mug.
That means if the blank mug is sitting on the table in front of you, position it so the handle is on the left to apply the decal. The side now facing you is where you want to put the decal for a right handed person.
Of course all this goes out the window if the person would rather they see the design on their mug and not the person sitting across from them.
And since I know you'll ask - I used Oracal 751vinyl to make this layered design. You can learn to layer multi colored vinyl decals using this Silhouette tutorial or check out this design being layered during a Facebook Live broadcast.

LOVED the guidance in this article! Here's some additional "statistical" information.
ReplyDeleteIf you produce mugs in bulk for sale at vendor events, as I do, only 5-30% of those mugs should be decaled for left handed people. Based on the following information published in Scientific American (a better resource than Wikipedia??): Most humans (say 70-95%) are right-handed, a minority (say 5-30%) are left-handed ...
As a lefty, I thank you for mentioning where to apply the decal for left handed users. So many bloggers and manufacturers forget about us and typically only gear their products to right handed users.
