The new Silhouette Portrait machine has been updated from its original version to include some of the popular features of the Silhouette CAMEO 3!
Silhouette Portrait 2 Features
The Silhouette Portrait 2 machine remains a 9" cutter, but is now Bluetooth enabled, has the ability to use the AutoBlade, and has a slightly higher (2mm) clearance. Unlike the Silhouette CAMEO 3, however, the Portrait 2 does not have a dual carriage which means only one tool can be used at a time. The smaller size of the machine limits it to a single tool carriage. That single carriage, though, can fit the Silhouette Autoblade or the ratchet blade, sketch pens, or any other tool that fits in the standard Silhouette tool slot.
In order to use Bluetooth and the Autoblade with the Silhouette Portrait 2, you must be using Silhouette Studio V3.8 or later. At this point I would recommend using V4.1 or higher. You can update your Silhouette Portrait software here from the Silhouette America site.
When using the Autoblade, be sure to line up the grooves on the blade with the grooves in the tool housing. Press the blade all the way down and push the lock in to lock it into place.
To set up Bluetooth with Silhouette Portrait 2 (or CAMEO 3), you can follow this tutorial on how to setup Silhouette Studio Bluetooth. The Portrait 2 machine does include the USB cord so you always have the option to cut with the wired connection.
Silhouette Portrait vs CAMEO
If you're debating between the two machines, it's important to understand the differences between Silhouette Portrait vs CAMEO 3. The biggest difference between the Silhouette CAMEO and Portrait is the size. The Portrait can cut 9" wide and 10' long, while the Silhouette CAMEO can cut 12" wide and 10' long. Because of the smaller size the Portrait is lighter weight, more portable, and less expensive.
The Silhouette Portrait software and the Silhouette CAMEO software - Silhouette Studio - are both the same. The cutting machines can also both cut all the same materials. Each can be used with popular Silhouette accessories including the Silhouette sketch pens, Pixscan cutting mat, and roll feeder (there is not a 24" Portrait cutting mat).
